How concrete polishing works
Polishing is a mechanical process done in stages, each with a finer diamond abrasive than the last. Think of it like sanding wood, except the "sandpaper" is industrial diamond tooling and the wood is a slab that can weigh several tons.
A typical job runs in three phases. Grinding opens the surface with coarse metal-bond diamonds, usually 30 to 150 grit, to flatten the floor and cut off old glue or coating. Honing follows with 100 to 400 grit resin pads. Polishing finishes from roughly 800 up to 3,000 grit, which is where the reflection builds.
Around the 200 grit stage, the crew sprays on a densifier (a lithium or sodium silicate that reacts with the concrete to fill pores and harden the top layer). It cures for about 24 hours. Grind and seal is the shortcut. Grinding stops at 100 to 200 grit, then a water-based urethane or acrylic sealer goes on top to create the sheen and the protection.
