Types of Concrete Curbs

The main types of curbs are barrier curb, mountable (rolled) curb, curb and gutter, mow curb, landscape curbing, and parking curbs. Each one does a different job. Barrier curb (vertical curb)

This is the standard street curb. A barrier curb has a tall, nearly vertical face, usually 6 inches above the gutter line, sometimes up to 8 inches on arterial roads. The steep face is the point. It physically blocks vehicles from leaving the pavement, protects sidewalks and lawns, and channels stormwater to the inlets.

You see barrier curbs along collector and arterial streets, around parking lot islands, and anywhere traffic needs a firm edge. The tradeoff is that a 6-inch vertical face is unfriendly to snow plows and hard to drive over on purpose, which is why residential streets often use a lower profile instead.

Mountable (rolled) curb

A mountable curb, also called a rolled or roll-over curb, has a low, rounded face you can drive across without scraping. Height is usually around 4 inches with a gentle slope, so a car can roll over it anywhere along its length. That is exactly why subdivisions like it: a homeowner can put a driveway apron wherever they want without cutting the curb, and the developer saves on curb cuts.

The downside is drainage and containment. A rolled curb holds back less water and does less to stop a vehicle that jumps the edge. Curb and gutter

Curb and gutter is a curb poured together with a flat gutter pan in one continuous section. The gutter is the shallow trough at the base that carries water along the street to a drain. Combining the two in a single pour makes a stronger, better-draining edge than a curb sitting on its own, which is why most municipal streets and larger parking lots spec it.

Mow curb (mowing strip)

A mow curb, or mowing strip, is a narrow band of concrete poured flush with the ground between a lawn and a bed, fence, or wall. It is not really a "curb" in the traffic sense at all. It sits at grass height, usually 3 to 4 inches wide, so the wheel of a mower can ride along it and cut the edge clean. No more trimming by hand, and no grass creeping into the flower bed.

Because a mow strip is flush and shallow, it uses very little concrete and needs almost no forming height. It is one of the easier concrete jobs a homeowner can take on, and it pays off every time you mow.

Landscape and decorative curbing

Landscape curbing is the low, continuous concrete border you see edging flower beds, trees, and walkways in yards. It is often extruded on site by a machine that lays a rounded or slant-faced bead of concrete in one pass, and it can be colored or stamped to look like stone or brick. Height is typically 4 to 6 inches above grade with a mowable back edge.

Parking curbs and wheel stops

Parking curbs, also called wheel stops, parking blocks, or concrete curb stops, are short precast blocks anchored at the head of a parking space. They stop a tire before the car rolls too far into a walkway, wall, or the next stall. Unlike the curbs above, these are not continuous. They are individual units you bolt or pin to the pavement.

Standard precast blocks run about 6 feet long, 6 to 8 inches deep, and 4 to 6 inches tall, per the dimensions listed at Dimensions.com. A 6-foot concrete block weighs a couple hundred pounds, which is what keeps it in place. They are usually painted yellow or white and pinned with steel spikes or rebar through cast-in holes. Because they are precast and dropped in, they install fast and are easy to replace when a plow catches one.

Precast versus cast-in-place curbs

Curbs are made two ways, and the method decides how the job runs.

Cast-in-place curb is formed and poured on site. Crews set forms, pour concrete, shape the profile, and strip the forms once it sets. This is how continuous street curb, curb and gutter, and most residential curbs get built. It gives you a monolithic run with no joints between units and lets you follow curves and grade changes exactly. It takes more labor and time on site.

Precast curb is cast at a plant, cured, then trucked in and set in place. Parking blocks and wheel stops are the common precast example, but you can also get precast curb sections for repairs and modular installs. Precast wins on speed and consistent quality, since it cures in a controlled setting. It loses flexibility, because you are placing fixed units instead of pouring to fit. As a rule, continuous runs get cast in place and discrete stops get precast.

Driveway curbs and curb cuts

A driveway curb is where a private drive meets the public street. If your street already has a mountable curb, a car can usually roll right over it. If it has a barrier curb, you need a curb cut: the curb is lowered or removed and a sloped apron is poured so vehicles can cross without scraping.

Here is the part people miss. Cutting or lowering a public curb almost always needs a permit from the city, because that curb and the strip behind it are in the public right of way. Cities like Minneapolis require a curb cut permit and a licensed contractor for the work, and Bob Vila notes the apron section over that right of way often has to meet the city's own spec. Do not saw into a street curb on your own. Call the city first, then price the apron.

ADA curb ramps

Where a sidewalk meets a street crossing, a curb ramp bridges the height difference so wheelchairs, strollers, and carts can get up and down. These are federally regulated, and the numbers are specific. Per the U.S. Access Board, a curb ramp run has a 1:12 maximum running slope (about 8.3 percent), a 1:48 maximum cross slope, and a 36-inch minimum width. A level top landing at least 36 inches long is required so a wheelchair can turn.

Many ramps also carry detectable warnings, the raised "truncated domes" you feel underfoot at a crossing. The Access Board specifies domes 0.9 to 1.4 inches at the base and 0.2 inch tall. They are mandatory at transit facilities and federally funded projects, though not at every location.
