A rough shorthand contractors use: an 80 lb bag makes about two-thirds of a cubic foot, a 60 lb bag about half, and a 40 lb bag about a third. One warning before you trust these numbers on a different product: yields are specific to standard Concrete Mix. Fast-Setting Concrete, Crack Resistant, and the 5000 blend can differ slightly, and non-concrete mixes like Mortar Mix or Sand/Topping yield differently again. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Divide 27 by the yield of a bag and you get how many bags it takes to make a full yard.

Those are the numbers to keep in your head: 45 eighty-pound bags, 60 sixty-pound bags, or 90 forty-pound bags make one cubic yard. They are also a reality check. Bags are sold by weight, but you pour by area and depth. This chart shows how many square feet one bag covers at common slab thicknesses, so you can eyeball a project fast. Coverage is just the bag yield divided by the depth in feet.

So an 80 lb bag of Quikrete covers about 3.6 square feet at 2 inches thick, and a 60 lb bag covers about 2.7 square feet at that same depth. Double the depth to 4 inches and each bag covers half as much. This is where people underestimate: a 4-inch slab is the standard for a patio or shed floor, and at that thickness an 80 lb bag only covers 1.8 square feet, so the bag count climbs fast on anything bigger than a step or a small pad.
The formula for calculating bags of Quikrete
Once you have a volume in cubic feet, the bag count is one division.
Bags needed = volume in cubic feet ÷ yield per bag (then round up)
Getting the volume is the only real work, and it depends on the shape:
Slab or rectangular pad: length (ft) x width (ft) x thickness (ft). Convert an inch thickness to feet by dividing by 12, so a 4-inch slab is 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft.
Round hole or column (a post footing): 3.14 x radius (ft) x radius (ft) x depth (ft).
Always round the final bag count up to the next whole bag, and add a cushion. Bags are cheap and a short pour is not. Buying one or two extra 80 lb bags is a few dollars of insurance against driving back to the store with wet concrete already setting in your wheelbarrow.
Worked example: a small slab
Say you are pouring a 4 ft by 4 ft equipment pad at 4 inches thick, and you want to use 80 lb bags.
- Thickness in feet: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333
- Volume: 4 x 4 x 0.333 = 5.33 cubic feet
- Bags: 5.33 ÷ 0.60 = 8.9, round up to 9 bags
- Add about 10 percent for waste and uneven subgrade, and you buy 10 bags
Ten 80 lb bags is 800 pounds of dry mix for one small pad. That is doable by hand with a mixer, but it is also the point where you start weighing bags against a short-load delivery.
Worked example: a footing
Footings eat more concrete than people expect because they are deep. Say you are pouring a strip footing for a small garden wall, 16 ft long, 8 inches wide, and 8 inches deep, using 60 lb bags.
- Width in feet: 8 ÷ 12 = 0.667
- Depth in feet: 8 ÷ 12 = 0.667
- Volume: 16 x 0.667 x 0.667 = 7.11 cubic feet
- Bags: 7.11 ÷ 0.45 = 15.8, round up to 16 bags
- Add 10 percent and you buy about 18 bags

Home Depot sells the 80 lb Concrete Mix as a "42 Bags / 1 Pallet" unit, which matches the standard (Home Depot, Quikrete Pallet of 80 lb Concrete Mix). When bags stop making sense
The bag math always works, but bags are not always the right call. Past about half a cubic yard, the labor of hauling, opening, and mixing dozens of bags, plus the cost, usually beats a ready-mix delivery even with a short-load fee.
