How to Mix Quikrete

Mixing Quikrete Concrete Mix is mostly about one thing: getting the water right. Add the amount printed on the bag, work it until there are no dry pockets, and stop while the mix is still stiff enough to hold its shape. An 80 lb bag takes about 6 pints of water, which is 3 quarts. A 60 lb bag takes about 4 pints. A 40 lb bag takes about 3 pints. Those are Quikrete's own starting numbers. Get close to them and you get strong concrete. Overshoot them and you get a soupy batch that pours easy and cracks later.

What you need

You do not need much to mix a few bags by hand.

  • A wheelbarrow or a mixing tub (a plastic mortar tub works fine)
  • A hoe or a flat shovel
  • A bucket you can measure water in
  • Waterproof gloves and eye protection (wet cement is caustic and will burn skin over time)

For anything past six or eight bags, rent a barrel mixer. Turning a full wheelbarrow of stiff concrete by hand is real work, and by the fourth bag most people start adding water just to make the mixing easier, which is exactly how a batch gets ruined.

Water per bag (Quikrete's numbers)

Quikrete lists a starting water amount for every bag size of Concrete Mix. Start a little under these, not over, because you can always add a splash more but you cannot take water back out.

Those water figures and yields come straight off the QUIKRETE Concrete Mix No. 1101 data sheet. Note the yield, because it decides how many bags you buy. An 80 lb bag makes about 0.6 cubic feet of concrete, so it takes roughly 45 of them to fill a cubic yard. Rule: start with about 2/3 of the listed water, mix, then add the rest slowly until it looks right.

That is Quikrete's own method, and it is the habit that keeps you out of trouble. If you dump all the water in at once you will almost always end up too wet.

How to mix Quikrete by hand

This is the wheelbarrow or tub method for a handful of bags.

1. Empty the bag and make a well. Pour the dry mix into the wheelbarrow or tub and pull it into a ring with a hollow in the middle, like a volcano.

2. Pour in about two-thirds of the water. For an 80 lb bag that is roughly 2 quarts of your 3. Pour it into the hollow so it does not run over the sides.

3. Work it with the hoe. Drag the dry mix in from the edges into the water, chopping and folding until the water is soaked up. Keep working the whole batch so nothing stays dry in the corners.

4. Add the rest of the water a little at a time. Add a cup or two, mix, look, repeat. Stop the moment the mix is uniform and workable. You are aiming to just wet everything, not to make it flow.

Quikrete describes the target this way: properly mixed concrete "should look like thick oatmeal and should hold its shape when it is squeezed in a gloved hand" (QUIKRETE hand-mixing instructions). That squeeze test is the best field check there is. Grab a handful in a gloved hand, close your fist, and open it. If it holds the shape of your fingers and does not slump into a puddle, you are there. If water runs out and it collapses, it is too wet.

How to mix Quikrete in a mixer

For bigger pours, a rented barrel mixer changes the order of operations. You put water in first.

1. Add water first. Measure the water for the number of bags you are running and pour about half of it into the spinning drum before any dry mix goes in. This keeps mix from caking on the bottom.

2. Add the dry mix and run it. With the mixer turning, add the bags, let it turn about a minute, then add the rest of the water as needed.

3. Mix 3 to 5 minutes. Quikrete says to "mix the concrete for about 3-5 minutes, until a uniform, workable consistency is achieved" (QUIKRETE machine-mixing instructions). Same oatmeal-that-holds-its-shape target as hand mixing. A 3 cubic foot barrel mixer will comfortably handle a couple of 80 lb bags at a time.

4. Dump and go. Tip the running drum into a wheelbarrow and place the concrete. Do not let a wet batch sit and stiffen in the mixer.

Let it slake, then remix

After the mix looks uniform, give it two or three minutes to sit, then turn it once more. This short rest lets the cement and sand finish soaking up water, and stray dry pockets that were hiding in the middle show themselves. Concrete guys call this slaking. It is a light habit rather than a hard rule for Concrete Mix, and it costs you nothing. Do not use the rest as an excuse to pour in more water. Nine times out of ten the batch is fine and just needed a minute.

The number one mistake: too much water

A wetter mix is easier to mix, easier to pour, and easier to trowel flat. That is exactly why so many people overwater, and it is the mistake that quietly wrecks the concrete. Water is what lets the cement chemically harden, but past the amount the cement can use, the extra water just leaves bleed channels and pores behind as it evaporates. More pores means weaker, more crack-prone concrete.

Quikrete puts an actual number on it: "adding one extra quart of water per 80 lb bag can reduce the strength of the concrete by up to 40%" (QUIKRETE hand-mixing instructions). One quart. That is a coffee mug and a half of extra water taking nearly half the strength out of your slab. There is no fixing it after the fact, and it will not show up until the concrete cracks or spalls months later.

So err dry. A stiff mix that takes some muscle to place is stronger than a loose one that flows into the corners by itself. If a batch does come out too wet, the clean fix is to open another bag and work some dry mix into it to bring the ratio back, not to pour it anyway and hope.

Contractors say the same thing in plainer terms. On The Garage Journal forum, where members worked out the water for a 23-bag pour, one poster's rule was "1 gal per 90 lb bag or just under," and another made the point that matters most for the days after: concrete "cures and does not dry, and in the absence of enough moisture content you could end up with substandard concrete." Mix stiff, then keep it damp while it cures. That is the whole game.

The wet sheen without standing water is the sweet spot. If there is a puddle sitting on the surface after you stop mixing, you went too far.

When you do not mix at all: fence posts

Not every Quikrete job gets mixed in a wheelbarrow. For setting fence posts, deck posts, and mailboxes, Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix is designed to go into the hole dry. You brace the post, "pour the dry concrete from the bag right into the hole, then add water," and the mix hydrates in place. After the pour: curing

Mixing it right is half the job. The other half is not letting it dry out too fast. Quikrete Concrete Mix wants roughly 5 days of curing in warm weather at 70 F or above, and about 7 days when it is cooler, between 50 and 70 F (data sheet). Keep the surface damp over that stretch, especially the first couple of days, or you undo some of the strength you were careful to mix in.
