How to pour a concrete floor, step by step

Here's the order of operations for a typical residential floor pour.

  1. Prep and compact the base. Excavate, level, and add your gravel in layers. Compact each layer with a plate compactor until it's tight and doesn't rut under your boot.
  2. Lay the vapor barrier. Roll poly over the compacted base, overlap seams by at least 6 inches, and tape them. Bring it up the sides so the slab is fully separated from the ground.
  3. Set your forms. Build straight, braced forms to the exact height of your finished floor. Check them for level and square, and set your slope if the floor needs to drain.
  4. Place reinforcement. Position mesh or your rebar grid on chairs so the steel lands in the middle third of the slab. Tie intersections so nothing shifts when concrete hits it.
